Register for the National Junior Firefighter Academy
If your Fire Corps team has members under the age of 18, then consider attending the National Junior Firefighter Academy. This special training is geared towards both youth who participate in the fire and emergency services as well as the advisors who manage a youth program.
Two National Junior Firefighter Academies will be held in the coming months. The first will be in Baltimore, MD, on Saturday, July 23, in conjunction with Firehouse Expo. The session for youth covers leadership, youth-led activities, and future paths in the fire service. The session for program advisors will cover serving as a youth mentor, health and safety for junior firefighter programs, and activity ideas for youth participants. Both sessions will be held from 9am-12pm. The Academy is sponsored by Firehouse Expo, Spartan Motors, Inc., and California Casualty. Register at http://firehouseexpo.com/events_nvfc.html. Seating is limited, so be sure to register early to guarantee your spot.
A second Junior Firefighter Academy will be held at the Scott Safety headquarters in Monroe, NC, on Saturday, October 8. Sponsored by Scott Safety and Tyco International, the full-day event will begin with classroom sessions for youth and advisors. After a lunch hosted by the National Volunteer Fire Council, participants will take a tour of the Scott facility and view product demonstrations. The day will wrap-up with a hands-on training challenge. Registration information will be available soon on the National Junior Firefighter Program web site at www.nvfc.org/juniors, or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
