NVFC Receives $10,000 BGE Emergency Response/Safety Grant to Help Deliver Preparedness Messages in Maryland

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) was awarded $10,000 from the Baltimore Gas and Electric’s (BGE) Emergency Response/Safety Grant. This grant will help the NVFC distribute free emergency preparedness training and supplemental resources to every fire department in Maryland utilizing Fire Corps resources.

The National Volunteer Fire Council’s Fire Corps program provides much-needed support for fire and emergency service agencies nationwide by fostering programs and services to help them utilize community volunteers in non-emergency activities within the department.

Through a mailing campaign, the NVFC will deliver Fire Corps disaster preparedness messages and offer free online training regarding rehab and preparedness initiatives through the Fire Corps Academy. The nearly 300 fire departments across the state of Maryland will receive this information directly in the mail and have the ability to take the online training at their own convenience.

“Fire departments are on the frontlines to protect their communities during and after tragedies, such as the Colorado Waldo Canyon wildfire and Hurricane Sandy,” said NVFC Executive Director Heather Schafer.  “We are grateful to BGE for helping us provide information and training to fire departments in Maryland to help them preserve and enhance life-saving measures by preventing and mitigating emergencies and strengthening resilience activities within local communities.”
