National Preparedness Month: Fire Corps in Disaster Response

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), a time to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, business, and communities. The theme for NPM 2011 is "A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare.” Take advantage of this opportunity to make sure your department, Fire Corps team, and community are prepared for all types of emergency situations.

This week, the National Volunteer Fire Council and Fire Corps are highlighting the role that Fire Corps teams can play in disaster response. Fire Corps is a way to get community members involved in the fire and emergency services to assist local departments with non-operational tasks. This allows emergency personnel to focus on training and response, while expanding the capacity of the department and increasing the services and programs a department can provide.

Among the functions that Fire Corps members can assist with is disaster response. Fire Corps volunteers can perform a variety of non-operational functions to support a department’s disaster response efforts. These include disaster pre-planning; educating the community on preparedness messages, information, and procedures; offering canteen and rehabilitation services to personnel responding to a disaster; helping with communications; providing community members with assistance in the aftermath of a disaster; and more.

Fire Corps offers a FREE webinar to help departments and Fire Corps teams learn how to best utilize non-operational volunteers in disaster response. FC-301: Fire Corps in Disaster Response shows how Fire Corps volunteers can be used to start, improve, or enhance a department’s existing disaster response efforts. The next session of FC-301 will be held on Friday, September 16 at 3:00pm EDT. To register, visit https://firecorps.webex.com, and click on Live Sessions, then the tab for Upcoming Sessions.
