Focus on Health and Wellness during National Firefighter Health Week

Did you know that firefighters face increased risk of heart disease and other health concerns? Or that almost half of all firefighter line-of-duty deaths each year are caused by heart attack? Your Fire Corps team can play a vital role in your department’s health and wellness initiatives to help to keep your community’s first responders strong and ready for the next call.

National Firefighter Health Week is August 14-20. This is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness among your first responders of critical health issues and start integrating health and fitness into the department. The online National Firefighter Health Week Resource Center provides tools and information to help you plan your department’s Health Week activities as well as promote the event in your department and throughout your community.

The 2011 theme – “When it comes to your health, you’re always on duty” – focuses on helping firefighters stay ready for the next call by being at their best mentally and physically. Have your Fire Corps team cook a healthy meal, organize an athletic event, or plan other healthy activities during National Firefighter Health Week to show your first responders you support them.

The National Volunteer Fire Council, through its Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, presents National Firefighter Health Week each August to promote firefighter health and wellness nationwide. Launched in 2007, the initiative is designed to create awareness around important health issues in the emergency services and encourage first responders to take action.
