Fire Corps Holds Successful Regional Conference

Fire Corps recently held its first regional conference on July 29 in Arlington, TX. Over 75 attendees came from Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the surrounding region to share ideas and best practices, network, participate in training, and learn valuable information to help departments and agencies enhance their Fire Corps initiatives.

The regional conference provided an opportunity for information-sharing, networking, and knowledge-building among Fire Corps stakeholders at the grassroots level. Participants included Fire Corps volunteers and program managers, Fire Corps State and Regional Advocates, Citizen Corps Council members, and other individuals with a vested interest in the program.

Fire Corps Director Sarah Lee started the day with an update from the national office, and Program Manager Lori Moon informed participants about current and upcoming resources. Additional speakers included Julie Martinez from the Texas Association of Regional Councils and Texas Citizen Corps and Shari Brand from Region VI of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Preparedness Division. Fire Corps Coordinators and State Advocates then shared best practices with the group about their local programs and initiatives.

Breakout sessions were held in the afternoon so that attendees could learn more about key areas of interest. Topics included promoting and recruiting for a local Fire Corps program; steps to receiving 501(c(3) status for a program; utilizing Fire Corps volunteers for home safety surveys; utilizing youth, seniors, and faith-based communities; and emergency services rehabilitation.

“This event was an excellent opportunity for in-person conversations and networking,” Lee said. “We received tremendous feedback from participants about the valuable information they took away from the conference. It was exciting to see how invigorated the volunteers and leaders were to go back and start new initiatives in their programs.”

Conference details, speaker presentations, and interviews of conference participants will be available soon at
