Welcome to the Fire Corps E-update. Fire Corps is a locally-driven Citizen Corps program that allows community members to offer their time and talents to their local fire and EMS departments in non-operational roles. Fire Corps serves as a gateway to information for and about fire and EMS department programs and meets a citizen's desire to serve as well as a department's need for support.

Johnson County (AR) Fire Safety Team Attends Presidential Forum

On October 16, two representatives from the Johnson County Rural Fire District (RFD) #1 Fire Safety Team attended the Presidential Forum on Service, held at the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas. The event was hosted by the Points of Light Institute to discuss the role of government in volunteer service, especially under the current administration’s leadership.

First Alert Offers Free Smoke Alarms to Fire Corps Programs for Fire Prevention Initiatives

To assist your Fire Corps program in providing critical services to your community through home safety checks and other fire prevention activities, First Alert is providing free smoke alarms to registered Fire Corps programs. Your program may apply for smoke alarms by filling out the Smoke Alarm Request Form. Please keep in mind that quantities are limited and restrictions apply. Fire Corps also provides a Home Safety Checklist to help your Fire Corps team implement home safety checks in your community. Find these resources and more at www.firecorps.org/prevention.

Nominate Fire Corps Volunteers for the Daily Points of Light Award

The Points of Light Institute is a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports civic engagement and volunteerism. The Daily Points of Light Award recognizes individual volunteers and groups that help to address the critical challenges facing their community. The award was established by former President George H.W. Bush and is awarded every weekday to a volunteer or group that participates in an activity that meets a community need and works toward achieving long-term solutions. Deadline for Fire Prevention and Safety Grant is October 23

The deadline to apply for the Department of Homeland Security’s FY 2009 Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant is October 23. The FP&S grant can help your department support important programs including Fire Corps activities. Learn more about the grant, read the Program Guidance, and apply at www.firegrantsupport.com/fps.

Update Your Fire Corps Profile

The Fire Corps web site is a great resource for potential volunteers looking for opportunities in their area and departments seeking to learn from other programs. To keep this resource current and accurate, we need your help. If your program has changed recently, please visit www.firecorps.org to update your profile information. The Fire Corps national office uses the information you provide to develop success stories and gather statistics for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Citizen Corps, and the White House. Department Profile: Mapleton (PA) Fire Department

The Mapleton Fire Department serves a population of approximately 2,000 in rural Pennsylvania. As a volunteer department, Mapleton relies on its five Fire Corps members to assist with the daily operations of the firehouse. Fire Corps volunteers are matched up with tasks based on their skills and interests, allowing them to enjoy their time at the station and make a bigger impact.
